A Different Priestly Scandal - by Michael Novak



Burning injustices rest on our consciences, and will continue to burn us until we correct them.
I had dinner the other night with a marvelous priest, who started out our dinner by having the little children who were with us recite together (partly in song) the blessing before meals. They loved doing it. Loved the sound of it. Loved the solemnity. Loved the fun.

I did not know until well along in the meal, almost at the very end, that this good priest – so well informed about so many matters of faith, so genial, and so patently good-hearted and faithful – had been falsely accused of sexual molestation eight years ago. He was forced to leave the ministry (an accusation these days is enough to do this – a horrible scandal in itself). His accuser died of a cocaine overdose in his mother’s house, but not before exonerating the priest by admitting the falsity of his accusation.

But all that notwithstanding, the bishop in his diocese has not moved – dared? – to reinstate this good man and return him to his proper standing in the priesthood, or even to give a public apology for his unjust treatment. Nor has the press that stirred up the atmosphere of high-tech lynchings revisited his case (and hundreds if not thousands of others) to clear them of this horrible wrong.
Very few raw accusations that have emerged since the priestly abuse crisis erupted were ever subject to due process and full discovery and an open trial.

In America, citizens have a right to their innocence until proven guilty. This good man was never given a hearing. He is still being punished – to the very the core of his being and in his very reason for existence – because of a false accusation and that alone. Further, it is an accusation that has been withdrawn by the accuser, and apologized for by his family: “Billy [name changed] would never have made the accusation if he had been sober.”

To have been treated as non-persons, as non-citizens, is an injustice that cries out to heaven for justice. Yet in addition to the truly evil predators that have been identified and weeded out, this is the fate of a considerable number of innocent Catholic priests in this country today.

El arzobispo de Oviedo y la «ofensiva descalificadora» contra Reig Pla


El arzobispo de Oviedo, Jesús Sanz Montes, considera que el obispo de Alcalá de Henares, Juan Antonio Reig Plá, "está siendo objeto de una ofensiva descalificadora por parte de ciertos lobbies gays y de algunas formaciones políticas", tras el sermón que pronunció el pasado Viernes Santo en la catedral complutense. A través de un comunicado, el responsable de la Iglesia Asturiana ha mostrado su solidaridad con el prelado madrileño, quien considera que dijo "lo que cualquier obispo podemos y debemos decir en virtud de lo que creemos"

Así ha salido al tanto de la polémica surgida tras las afirmaciones de Reig, quien en su sermón, afirmaba lo siguiente: "quisiera decir una palabra a aquellas personas llevados por tantas ideologías que acaban por no orientar bien lo que es la sexualidad humana. Piensan ya desde niños que tienen atracción hacia las personas de su mismo sexo y, a veces, para comprobarlo se corrompen y se prostituyen o van a clubs de hombres nocturnos. Os aseguro que encuentran el infierno".

"El delito" de Reig, según Sanz, "consiste en haber dicho que hay gente destruida no por la homosexualidad, sino por la vivencia desgarradora de esa circunstancia, tan desgarradora que terminan destruidos afectiva y psicológicamente". "Que quieran censurar a un Obispo como Mons. Reig, que lo quieran excluir como si fuera un proscrito, por haber dicho lo que cualquier Obispo podemos y debemos decir en virtud de lo que creemos, con respeto y con verdad, es señal del cinismo hipócrita con el que algunos representantes de sus ideologías con carnet, pretenden asustar con amenazas como si fueran el ´Gran Gendarme´ del personal", ha criticado el arzobispo de Oviedo, para quien "no es algo aislado, sino el ataque frontal contra la Iglesia".

Respeto a los homosexuales
Manifiesta igualmente su "respeto solidario a las personas homosexuales que no quieren vivir en ningún infierno de escarnio y reprobación, ni en ningún infierno de falsedad". Así ha relatado su experiencia de trato con personas homosexuales, "que frecuentemente son utilizados ideológicamente, personas llenas de dignidad que fueron objeto de burlas y que no se sienten representados por grupos de presión gay".

Sanz asegura que en sus años de estudios en Austria y Madrid tuvo que atender a homosexuales que "venían a pedirme ayuda en un momento de confusión, de duda, de dolor, de incomprensión ajena y de incomprensión propia". "Personas llenas de dignidad que tienen que habérselas con una situación compleja para la que no tienen palabras y que ellos mismos no terminan de comprender tantas cosas que les llenan de interrogantes", las define.

"Me llamaba la atención cómo ellos no banalizaban su difícil situación, cómo no querían una defensa de sus derechos cuando no eran sus derechos como personas lo que estaban en entredicho, cómo se distanciaban tanto de los lobbies gays por los que no se sienten representados, como de los que les están utilizando desde la ideología de género", incide el arzobispo, para quien la realidad cotidiana de estos homosexuales "es tremendamente más dura y contradictoria que cuanto exhiben las caravanas de los días del orgullo (¿?) gay".

Defiende también "la postura doctrinal de la Iglesia católica sobre la homosexualidad", pues "recuerda las enseñanzas del catecismo de la Iglesia sobre esta condición humana, para la que reclama, a su vez, acogida, respeto y delicadeza". "Los homosexuales no deben ser objeto de discriminación", afirma Sanz, quien asegura que "lo que la Iglesia Católica piensa sobre la homosexualidad, recoge el respeto grande que estas personas nos merecen".

Law professor says flawed view of sex threatens religious freedom - by Michelle Bauman

.- A law professor at George Mason University believes that current threats to religious freedom are intrinsically connected to the modern understanding that “sexual freedom is about shaping yourself.” 

Helen Alvaré, who has formerly worked with the U.S. bishops' pro-life office, spoke on May 10 at the Catholic Information Center in Washington, D.C. She observed that many modern threats to religious freedom “are coming by way of a newly strong government position on human sexuality.”

This view holds that sex is unrelated to procreation or the union of man and woman, but is simply about “expressing oneself” and forming one’s identity through various sexual acts, she explained.

Alvaré traced this understanding of sexuality through court decisions in the last 50 years.

In 1965, the Supreme ruled in Griswold v. Connecticut that the Constitution implicitly protects the “right to marital privacy” and that married couples therefore have a right to contraception. At this point, Alvaré observed, the union of the married couple was still intact in the understanding of sex. 

By 1992, however, the court upheld the “right” to abortion by describing sexual decisions as a means of shaping one’s identity, she said. 

In its Planned Parenthood v. Casey decision, the plurality opinion affirmed “the right to define one's own concept of existence, of meaning, of the universe, and of the mystery of human life.”

At this point, Alvaré said, sex has been “completely disconnected from the other person” and is solely about expressing oneself and building identity.

This view is reflected today, she explained, pointing to the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the U.S., which distributes information to young people encouraging them to explore and express themselves in different sexual ways.

This disconnected idea of sexual expression as an individual right can also be seen in a careful reading of the court cases supporting a redefinition of marriage, Alvaré added. In these court opinions, “same-sex marriage is not about the two people in the marriage. It’s about the individual expressing themself sexually.”

It is in this context that the Obama administration’s contraception mandate comes into being, with “no hesitation in divorcing sex from everything” that it physically, emotionally and spiritually means, she continued.

The mandate has been heavily criticized as a major threat to religious freedom because it will require employers to offer health insurance plans that cover contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs, even if doing so violates their religious beliefs. 

Alvaré views the mandate as a “culmination” of a view of sexuality that has become more and more disconnected from marriage, procreation and the natural unity of man and woman.

She explained that this way of thinking began with the argument that taking the babies out of sex would allow couples to flourish, women to escape poverty and children to avoid being raised in bad situations. 

But this has changed drastically, in a way that is evident by the “models of freedom” used to defend the contraception mandate, she said. 

Rather than a woman facing poverty or a married couple overwhelmed by a dozen kids, the iconic figures in the sexual freedom debate today are unmarried, highly educated, and fairly well-off financially. 

She pointed to Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown University law student who has become a leading figure in the push for free birth control. 

These women are not talking about marriage, poverty or the wellbeing of children, Alvaré observed. Rather, they are simply saying that they want a regular sex life with a constant supply of contraception, and they want someone else to pay for it. 

This “right to a commitment-free, child-free sexual experience” has become so elevated that no religious conscience is permitted to object to it, she said, explaining that when disconnected sexual expression becomes a basic and fundamental right, religious liberty suffers.

This can be seen today, as Catholic individuals and institutions are told that they shouldn’t “even be able to have a critical stance” on issues such as contraception, she said.

She also observed that proponents of the mandate are making claims of a “war on women” and using “language of discrimination,” as if religious individual seeking to follow their conscience were violent members of the Ku Klux Klan, who should not have a voice in the public square.

The Catholic Church’s idea of sexuality as being connected to marriage and new life is “absolutely contrary” to the modern understanding, Alvaré explained.

As Catholics step up to defend religious freedom, she noted, they also have a chance to help change the way that human sexuality is viewed.

“I really see this time as an opportunity,” she said.

Vaticano recoge firmas para defender a no nacidos en Europa

ROMA, 18 May. 12 / 02:26 am (ACI/EWTN Noticias).- Bajo el lema "Uno de Nosotros", el Pontificio Consejo para los Laicos (PCL), presidido por el Cardenal Stanis?aw Rylko, lanzó una importante iniciativa para defender la vida de los niños por nacer en Europa.

En su lucha por dar voz "a quien no la tiene", a través del su sitio web oficial, el PCL informó que el pasado 11 de mayo presentó ante la Unión Europea para proceder a la recogida de las firmas a favor del reconocimiento de la dignidad humana y el derecho a la vida de todo ser humano.

El PCL propuso que la vida de los "no nacidos", debe respetarse a nivel legal desde el primer instante de la concepción. Para que la petición sea aceptada, la Iglesia debe reunir en un plazo de un año –hasta el 11 de mayo de 2013-, un millón de firmas. Los firmantes deben ser de ciudadanos pertenecientes a al menos siete estados europeos.

El dicasterio vaticano explicó que la Unión Europea "no puede cambiar las leyes de los estados en las materias que se refieren a la vida por nacer, pero puede, por sí misma, comportarse de modo coherente con el principio de la igualdad de dignidad de cada ser humano desde la concepción en todas las actividades que desarrolla directamente –investigación científica, ayuda al desarrollo, sanidad-".

Para la recogida de firmas, los organizadores constituyeron un comité constituido por 41 representantes de 21 movimientos pro-vida de 20 naciones distintas.

Los organizadores tienen como objetivo superar con creces el millón de firmas y suscitar la participación de todos los 27 estados europeos en aquello que "ven no solamente como una necesidad, sino como una urgencia".

La iniciativa además, propone una novedosa misión "ad gentes": La recogida de firmas irá acompañada de numerosas actividades educativas y culturales marcadas por la unidad y la colaboración de todas las asociaciones y movimientos cristianos que quieran sumarse de toda la Unión Europea.

El PCL espera conseguir "una unidad de tentativas que sea totalmente fuerte y visible como para sugerir un diálogo sincero y constructivo con todos los hombres".

Además, el PCL subrayó que es necesario provocar la "‘movilización general’ de la totalidad del pueblo de la vida al que llamó Juan Pablo II en la Encíclica Evangelium Vitae".

El dicasterio vaticano resaltó que es de urgente necesidad "una renovación real, civil y moral en este momento de crisis, de desconfianza, y de resignación, y puede comenzar a partir del dar una ‘gran voz’ a quien no tiene voz", y esta es "una ocasión importante para suscitar un verdadero y propio despertar de los pueblos europeos", concluyeron.

Movimientos católicos se unen a favor de la vida
Dentro de este marco, el Movimiento por la Vida Italiano celebrará el próximo domingo 20 de mayo en el Aula Pablo VI de la Ciudad del Vaticano, "Uno de Nosotros", un evento apoyado por Comunión y Liberación, el Movimiento de los Focolares, Acción Católica, el Fórum de las Asociaciones Familiares, la Comunidad Papa Juan XXIII, la Renovación en el Espíritu Santo, y el Camino Neocatecumenal.

El evento se desarrollará de 09:00 a 13:30 de la mañana, y contará con una conexión al medio día con la Plaza de San Pedro para rezar el Ángelus junto al Papa Benedicto XVI. Se espera que durante el encuentro participe el Presidente del Pontificio Consejo para la Familia, Cardenal Ennio Antonelli.

Pleno respaldo a Mons. Reig Pla tras decisión del Ayuntamiento que lo veta de actos oficiales

ALCALÁ, 17 May. 12 / 04:15 pm (ACI/EWTN Noticias).- El Vicario General, los Vicarios Episcopales y los miembros de arciprestes de la diócesis de Alcalá de Henares (España), expresaron su pleno respaldo al Obispo Juan Antonio Reig Pla luego que el Ayuntamiento aprobara una moción con la cual vetan la participación del Prelado en los actos oficiales.
A través de un comunicado dado a conocer hoy, los firmantes señalan que "hemos conocido la noticia de que algunos concejales del Ayuntamiento de Alcalá de Henares, los pertenecientes a los partidos políticos UPyD, PSOE e IU, han aprobado una moción en virtud de la cual censuran diversos aspectos de la Doctrina Católica enseñada por Mons. Juan Antonio Reig Pla en su calidad de Obispo Complutense y vetan su presencia en los actos institucionales organizados por el Ayuntamiento". 

El comunicado señala luego que "ante estos gravísimos hechos, manifestamos nuestra adhesión a la Doctrina Católica enseñada por nuestro padre y pastor Mons. Reig, así como a su persona y ministerio apostólico, e invitamos a todos a orar por la libertad religiosa, por nuestro Obispo y por aquellos que persiguen a la Iglesia Católica".

El 15 de mayo el Ayuntamiento aprobó la citada moción en la que también solicitan el traslado de Mons. Reig Pla a otra sede. Ese mismo día el Obispado emitió un comunicado en el que respaldaba plenamente al Prelado.

El respaldo de los vicarios y del Obispado se suma al de una veintena de exhomosexuales que le agradecen a Mons. Juan Antonio Reig Pla haber salido del "infierno" del estilo de vida gay, así como al de la Conferencia Episcopal Española, la Comisión Permanente del Foro de Laico, la Federación Internacional de Asociaciones de Médicos Católicos (FIAMC), entre otros.

Mons. Reig Plá despertó la ira y los ataques del colectivo gay español y de los partidos de izquierda, luego de que en su homilía de Viernes Santo criticara el estilo de vida homosexual de quienes "piensan ya desde niño que tienen atracción hacia las personas de su mismo sexo y, a veces, para comprobarlo se corrompen y se prostituyen o van a clubes de hombres nocturnos. Os aseguro que encuentran el infierno".

Global pro-life summit attracts media attention to Portugal pro-life referendum - by Patrick B. Craine

LISBON, Portugal, May 14, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Leaders representing ten different nations gathered in Lisbon last weekend to support Portugal’s pro-life personhood measures. Sponsored by Personhood USA, LifeSiteNews.com, and Human Life International, the Global Pro-Life Unity Summit encouraged the worldwide pro-life movement and lent international support to Portugal’s referendum which would guarantee “the inviolability of human life from conception to natural death.”

Friday’s press conference spotlighted the Portuguese Pro Referendo Vida campaign and made national TV, radio, and print news. Inês Faria de Castro explained to reporters that, “Life is beautiful. Women deserve better than abortion. Abortion hurts women. Motherhood is the greatest gift to the world. It is my greatest joy.”

In comments to the media, LifeSiteNews.com editor John-Henry Westen tied the issue to the famous Portugal shrine of Fatima. “Since my youth I’ve loved Our Lady of Fatima,” he said. “Her promise was that Portugal would keep the dogma of the Catholic faith and the world would look to Portugal. Legalizing abortion was a huge disappointment; I think the whole world is waiting for a resurgence, especially from the Portuguese, to lead this path back to life.”

Portuguese pro-life campaigners were out in force outside Fatima over the weekend gathering more signatures of support for their pro-life initiative.

As Portugal celebrated Mother’s Day, summit leaders representing thousands of pro-life individuals around the world through their organizations signed the following joint declaration.

During the Summit, Ireland’s Youth Defence shared their cutting-edge pro-life strategies to educate the public on abortion. 

Representatives of pro-life organizations from the Dominican Republic, Ireland, and Hungary explained their successful campaigns to keep their nations safe for unborn children. 

Dr. Judith Szigeti told how Hungary’s “celestial and terrestrial constitution” inspired pro-life advocates to cheer the slogan: “Peace in the womb! Amnesty for us—amnesty for our children before birth!” About one million people rallied in support of the new Constitution, which entered into force on January 1 of this year. She challenged Hungarian lawmakers to now put into practice what they have put into words by changing the penal code to criminalize abortion.

The successful passage of 18 personhood amendments in Mexican states encouraged personhood advocates in the United States pursuing similar initiatives. 

Personhood USA’s Keith Mason called personhood a “revival in the heart of pro-lifers in America. Nobody should be comfortable while abortion is happening. The grassroots are the ones who must exert pressure on the politicians.”

Dr. Daniela Păun from Darul Vieţii (“the Gift of Life”) Association told the summit that pro-life advocates “need to understand the ideology of eugenics and communist purges to defeat the pro-choice agenda” in Romania. Communists made abortion legal in 1958 and now Romania faces a demographic crisis with about 480 abortions per 1000 live births. Inspired by the presentations in Lisbon, Dr. Păun exclaimed, “It’s time to create peaceful social tension in Romania by going on the political offensive!

Fátima atraiçoada?

Tem quase noventa anos, uma saúde débil obriga-o a passar longo tempo nos hospitais, espaço que aproveita para rezar o Rosário completo (20 mistérios), é professor universitário, dotado de uma inteligência aguda, memória precisa, e um coração ardente de amor por Jesus e Maria, Sua e nossa Mãe, que, como escrevia o nosso P. Manuel Bernardes, são um só Coração em virtude da sua estreitíssima união mística de Amor. Não se conforma com a perdição dos homens pelo pecado e particularmente com esse horror, com essa injustiça tremenda, o qual conduz tantas almas ao Inferno, que é o aborto provocado. Sabe que a Misericórdia do Redentor é maior do que a enormidade das nossas fragilidades podendo operar em nós o arrependimento e a conversão. Por isso nunca desiste na sua entrega a Deus e aos homens seus irmãos, pese embora todas as indiferenças e humilhações com que tem sido provado ao longo da vida. É um guerreiro, um batalhador destemido, infatigável, um conquistador determinado às ordens do Amor para que este impere em Portugal e no mundo inteiro. A sua fidelidade à Igreja é exemplar e o abrasado amor à Eucaristia e, consequentemente, ao Sacerdócio Ministerial mete espanto, deslumbra por seu esplendor, fazendo lembrar os excessos de S. Francisco de Assis.
Na sua solicitude pelo bem de todos passou o dia doze (12), do corrente, em Fátima mendigando assinaturas para uma petição a favor de um novo referendo sobre o aborto que tem como propósito abrogar a “lei” injusta e iníqua em vigor. Chegou a casa, em Lisboa, às três horas da madrugada do dia treze (13). Nesse dia, mais tarde, confidenciou-me amargurado: “Nunca imaginei que houvesse tanta gente em Portugal a favor do aborto enquanto outros numa indiferença confrangedora nem me respondiam ao apelo contra o aborto e mostravam uma indiferença total…! E isto em Fátima!”.
Mais tarde enviou-me uma “mensagem de Nossa Senhora” (advirto que quanto me é dado saber estas revelações particulares ainda não foram aprovadas pela Igreja, o que não significa que não possam vir a sê-lo) do mesmo dia 13, colhida no sítio http://www.holylove.org , que assim reza: «Blessed Mother says: "Praise be to Jesus."
