"Premio Hitler" a chi ama gli animali più dell'uomo - di Rino Cammilleri

Riporta «Il Giornale» dell’8 novembre che la Federfauna ha istituito il premio «Adolf Hitler» per coloro che nel corso dell’anno si sono particolarmente distinti nell’amore per gli animali. Pare che favoriti siano l’ex sottosegretario Michela Brambilla e il filosofo australiano Peter Singer, arcinoto fautore di vegetarianismo, aborto, eutanasia e «amore libero» nel senso più ampio possibile.

Il vincitore riceverà una targa con la foto del Führer che accarezza i caprioli (sullo sfondo, Auschwitz e la scritta “Animal Rights” corretta in “Animal Reich”). Luogo e data: la rossa Bologna, 24 novembre. Perché il 24 novembre? Perché in quel giorno, nel 1933, Hitler fece varare la prima legge al mondo a favore degli animali, detta Tierschutgesetz. Hitler era infatti, oltreché vegetariano, astemio e odiatore fanatico del fumo, un acceso animalista e sotto di lui la Germania fu la prima nazione a vietare la vivisezione negli istituti di ricerca. Il Terzo Reich arrivò a proibire il fumo nelle caserme della Luftwaffe (come ho più ampiamente riferito nel mio libro I mostri della Ragione, Ares) negli anni in cui tutto il pianeta fumava con gusto e gli Usa erano costellati di cartelloni in cui si invitava a fumare perché «faceva bene». Cosa sarebbero i films degli anni Trenta senza Humphrey Bogart e la sua perenne sigaretta accesa?

Hitler adorava la sua cagna Blondie, un pastore (va da sé) tedesco (deutscherschäferhund), da cui non volle separarsi nemmeno nel bunker finale e che condivise con Eva Braun la pozione avvelenata. I giornali italiani anteguerra riportavano vignette satiriche in cui Hermann Goering (che condivideva le passioni di Hitler) passava tronfio in rivista tra due file di cani che gli facevano il saluto nazista. Il Reich costrinse gli scienziati tedeschi a studiare gli effetti del fumo e questi furono i primi a evidenziare il rapporto tra fumo e cancro ai polmoni.

Insomma, l’attuale trend di pensiero ha tutto il suo apparato salutista, animalista, vegetariano, abortista, eutanasico ed eugenetico già presente nel Terzo Reich. È un’ascendenza imbarazzante, certo, ma carta canta. L’amore sviscerato della filosofia nazista per le bestie dimostra che il vecchio detto «chi non ama gli animali non ama gli uomini» non è altro che una emerita fesseria.

La Federfauna, confederazione italiana di allevatori, commercianti e detentori di animali, intende col premio Hitler «riaffermare l’idea che gli animali, pur con i loro diritti, restano sempre funzionali all’uomo». Ovviamente, i favoriti al premio e gli animalisti in toto si sono infuriati per l’evidente presa di fondelli. Ma il presidente della Federfauna, Massimiliano Filippi sembra deciso ad andare fino in fondo, tant’è che al premiato verrà imbandita una cena di gala «a base di prodotti di origine animale, che costituisce il resto del premio». Gli animalisti, ripetiamo, non hanno gradito e hanno risposto per le rime. Ma certi loro metodi - taglio di reti, distruzione di gabbie (e conseguente morte per fame di visoni “liberati”), vernice sulle pellicce delle signore, vetrine di pelletterie spaccate, blitz nei centri di ricerca - ricordano alla lontana, piaccia o no, quelli delle camicie brune.

Notizia recente: la morte di decine di cani da caccia in Valtrompia, storica zona di doppiette, letteralmente disseminata di bocconi avvelenati per opera di ignoti. Le autorità hanno dovuto mettere sull’avviso i proprietari di cani, perché il rischio è realmente alto (anche i cani da compagnia possono imbattersi nei nefasti bocconi, magari passeggiando nei boschi). Certo, non è giusto puntate il dito sulle associazioni animaliste, perché nessuno ha rivendicato il gesto. È però vero che gli uccellini del bresciano quest’anno potranno stare tranquilli.

Ormai i cani, anche di grossa taglia, e ogni altro animale da compagnia possono salire sui treni, entrare nei negozi e aggirarsi tra gli ombrelloni. Ciò, certo, darà (e già dà) luogo a infiniti litigi con strascichi negli intasatissimi tribunali italiani, perché non tutti proprietari di animali sono educati o almeno non egoisti. Ma gli animalisti sono una minoranza aggressiva e ideologizzata. E, come tale, non si fermerà finché non avrà imposto i suoi diktat a tutta la nazione. Comprensibili le tasche piene della Federfauna, che, a differenza di altri, ha scelto l’innocua arma dello sberleffo.

Eutanásia: O Fundo do Poço - por George J. Marlin

Pouco depois da invasão da Polónia, em 1939, Hitler autorizou os médicos alemães a empregar medidas de suicídio assistido involuntário. Foram abertos seis centros de eutanásia, designados, eufemisticamente, Fundações Caridosas para Cuidados Institucionais. Como o nome indica, a matança foi racionalizada como sendo um acto de compaixão.

Os julgamentos de Nuremberga revelaram que este programa inicial, limitado à Alemanha, tinha sido responsável pela morte de 70 mil adultos e cinco mil crianças, apesar de outras estimativas apontarem para os 400 mil. O programa foi encerrado em 1941 por ordem do Führer, porque estava a despertar oposição no país.

O bispo católico de Múnster, August von Galen, causou grande impacto público quando denunciou as políticas de eutanásia a partir do púlpito, em 1941:

Se estabelecermos e aplicarmos o princípio de que se pode “matar” seres humanos improdutivos, então ai de nós quando formos velhos e frágeis! Se podemos matar os improdutivos, então ai dos inválidos que esgotaram, sacrificaram e perderam a sua força e a sua saúde no processo produtivo... Pobres, doentes, improdutivos, e daí? Acaso eles perderam o direito à vida? Vocês e eu temos o direito a viver apenas enquanto formos produtivos?... Ninguém estaria a salvo. Quem poderia confiar no seu médico? O comportamento depravado e a suspeição que entrariam na vida familiar caso esta doutrina terrível seja tolerada, adoptada e praticada são inconcebíveis.

Houve protestos públicos – uma raridade na Alemanha nazi.

A resposta dos nazis foi de transferir os programas para os países conquistados, a leste, onde acabaram por se transformar na Solução Final. O suicídio assistido involuntário tornou-se a “solução médica” para eliminar não só os doentes, mas também os judeus, ciganos e eslavos, que eram considerados raças “doentes”.

Depois da Segunda Guerra Mundial o movimento para o suicídio assistido voltou à clandestinidade. Mas nos anos 60 e 70 estava a regressar, levando o comentador britânico Malcolm Muggeridge a dizer: “Podem submeter isto ao livro dos recordes do Guinness: leva apenas trinta anos para a nossa sociedade humanista transformar um crime de guerra num acto de compaixão.”

Eis que a Euthanasia Education Council mudou de nome para Concern for Dying, Inc.; e a Euthanasia Society of America se transformou na Society for the Right to Die, Inc. Apareceram outras organizações, como a Choice in Dying.

Não deixa de ser preocupante que as mesmas nações que fazem fronteira com a Alemanha e que testemunharam as políticas grotescas de Hitler – A Bélgica, Holanda e o Luxemburgo – tenham legalizado a eutanásia, consagrando-a como direito humano fundamental.

Desde a década de 70 que os tribunais holandeses têm estado a aumentar a quantidade de candidatos à eutanásia. No início dos anos 90 o poder judicial já permitia o suicídio assistido para doentes psiquiátricos que estavam fisicamente sãos. Num caso um psiquiatra foi ilibado de ajudar um doente mental a suicidar-se porque o tribunal concluiu que o doente, embora mentalmente doente, era competente e livre de decidir que queria morrer. O tribunal considerou que seria discriminatório permitir o suicídio assistido apenas para pessoas que sofriam de forma física. A dor psicológica ou mesmo a infelicidade não podem ser excluídas como razões válidas para o suicídio.

Os tribunais holandeses decidiram que quando a consciência de um médico está em conflito com a lei, ele está autorizado a receitar a eutanásia para aliviar o sofrimento. É apresentado como um exemplo de força maior, uma série de eventos imprevistos que anulam as necessidades legais normais.

Num artigo do “Wall Street Journal”, publicado no dia 14 de Junho de 2013, Naftali Bendavid informa que os casos de eutanásia na Bélgica, onde o procedimento foi legalizado em 2002, aumentaram de 200 em 2002 para 1133 em 2011.

Actualmente, segundo Bendavid, “A lei belga reserva a eutanásia para doentes com sofrimento insuportável e condições incuráveis. Mas o sofrimento não precisa de ser físico nem a doença terminal. A lei também não requer que o doente informe a sua família da decisão.”

Para piorar a situação, é esperado que o Parlamento belga aprove uma lei que permita a eutanásia para menores desde que “um psiquiatra determine que a criança tem capacidade de discernimento” e “desde que os seus pais concordem”.

O Conselho para os Direitos dos Doentes comentou, acerca disto: “Se pôr fim ao sofrimento é uma boa prática médica, porque não há-de o ser para quem tem três anos, cinco ou oito?”

Em resposta, o Arcebispo de Bruxelas, André-Joseph Léonard, disse: “Os menores são considerados incapazes para certos actos, como comprar e vender, casar, e por aí fora. E agora, de repente, são suficientemente maturos aos olhos da lei para poderem pedir a alguém que lhes tire a vida?”

A Bélgica e a Holanda já chegaram ao fundo de um poço. Estão a matar, voluntariamente, os nascituros, os doentes, os novos e os velhos – tudo em nome da compaixão.

João Paulo II já nos avisava para isto na sua encíclica de 1995, “O Evangelho da Vida”:

Mesmo quando não é motivada pela recusa egoísta de cuidar da vida de quem sofre, a eutanásia deve designar-se uma falsa compaixão, antes uma preocupante “perversão” da mesma: a verdadeira “compaixão”, de facto, torna solidário com a dor alheia, não suprime aquele de quem não se pode suportar o sofrimento. E mais perverso ainda se manifesta o gesto da eutanásia, quando é realizado por aqueles que — como os parentes — deveriam assistir com paciência e amor o seu familiar, ou por quantos — como os médicos —, pela sua específica profissão, deveriam tratar o doente, inclusive nas condições terminais mais penosas.

Se deixarmos de cultivar um sentido da sacralidade da vida humana até ao seu fim natural – e neste momento a reforma do sistema de saúde de Obama parece apontar nessa direcção – então não se admirem se os nossos hospitais e lares se transformarem em matadouros “compassivos”.

A mundanidade na Igreja - por Nuno Serras Pereira

No seguimento da legislação que aprovou a adopção de crianças por pseudocasais do mesmo sexo, em 2014 o Presidente da Republica promulgou a liberalização da pedofilia, que de resto tinha deixado de ser considerada uma parafilia. Em finais de Abril desse ano, o mesmo chefe de estado galardoa o responsável do protocolo do Vaticano, Monsenhor José Avelino Bettencourt, com a Comenda da Ordem Militar de Cristo. 

 
 
Dir-me-ão que este futuro aqui imaginado, mesmo no caso de virem a suceder tais barbaridades, é totalmente impossível porque o repúdio veemente da Igreja por essas atrocidades nefandas a impediria de se prestar a esse tipo de manipulações “honrosas”, que só poderiam ser interpretadas como acordo ou compromisso com tais práticas. Pois a isso respondo que quem pactua, ou o aparenta, no mais grave também o fará no menos. De facto, no Código de Direito Canónico não está prevista a pena de excomunhão para quem deporta, ou mata judeus, ou portugueses ou ingleses, já nascidos; nem tão pouco o está para os crimes de pedofilia; mas para o aborto provocado, lá figura. Se a Igreja, para diferentes pecados, todos eles mortais, faz distinção através de penas canónicas extremas, é porque reconhece a sua maior gravidade.

Ainda não há muito tempo estas bajulações mundanas eram prontamente repugnadas pela Igreja. Por exemplo, quando Hitler, a convite de Mussolini, visitou Itália, o Papa Pio XI abandonou propositadamente Roma para não se encontrar com ele. Apesar das ordens expressas de Mussolini para que na cidade de Florença se engalanassem as janelas, portões e sacadas, o Cardeal dessa insigne Diocese mandou que os edifícios pertencentes à Igreja, designadamente o Paço Episcopal, fechassem tudo, com sinais de luto, e recusou-se ao encontro com Hitler. Tudo isto aconteceu em Maio de 1938, antes pois do início da II guerra mundial.

“We’ve grown hoarse saying this is not about contraception, this is about religious freedom,” Timothy Cardinal Dolan has repeatedly insisted, regarding the lawsuits opposing the HHS Obamacare Mandate.

I beg to differ. On both prudential and metaphysical grounds, it is about contraception.

On the practical level, in politics, as Grover Norquist reminds us, you don’t get two desserts. With the loss at the Supreme Court, we will have to adopt the position that the Mandate is a bad law and we will not follow it regardless of our loss in court. “Sore losers!” will come the reply.

Why not just tell the truth now? Yes, our First Amendment rights are fundamental – in fact, they existed long before the Bill of Rights was written. But the courts are no longer bound by Jefferson’s “Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God,” and they have said so. With regard to our religious freedom, they simply cannot be trusted. And for that judgment we have ample precedent.

New York Gov. Charles Evans Hughes, before he became Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, affirmed 95 years ago that “we are under a Constitution, but the Constitution is what the judges say it is, and the judiciary is the safeguard of our liberty and of our property under the Constitution.”

Actually, Your Honor, the Constitution is the safeguard of our liberty and of our property. But the Supreme Court has been glad to arrogate to itself that august task. In Cooper v. Aaron (1958), a unanimous Court made it clear:
Article VI of the Constitution makes the Constitution the “supreme Law of the Land.” In 1803, Chief Justice Marshall, speaking for a unanimous court, referring to the Constitution as the “fundamental and paramount law of the nation, declared in the notable case of Marbury v. Madison that “it is emphatically the province and duty of the judicial department to say what the law is.” This decision declared that basic principle that the federal judiciary is supreme in the exposition of the law of the Constitution, and that principle has ever since been respected by this court in the country as a permanent and indispensable feature of our constitutional system.”
Which brings us to the metaphysical level – or, rather, to the denial of metaphysics altogether. If “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God” – that is, the Natural Law – no longer constrain the Court’s powers, what – beyond judicial caprice — is to protect our First Amendment rights? Los Angeles Archbishop José Gomez acknowledges America’s Christian roots, but goes on to observe that “our freedoms are also being eroded as the result of constant agitation from de-Christianizing and secularizing elements in American society.” Unfortunately, those “elements” now dominate our legal system, where “the Dictatorship of Relativism” abounds in the robes of Legal Positivism.

Natural Law Need Not Apply

Legal Positivism rests on the assumption that the law need have no basis in morality. As Notre Dame Professor of Constitutional Law Charles Rice has noted, “Hans Kelsen, the father of legal positivism, observed that Auschwitz and the Soviet Gulags were valid law. He could not criticize them as unjust because justice, he said, is ‘an irrational ideal.’”

Kelsen’s view holds not only for Hitler’s Germany and Stalin’s Soviet Union, but for America today. During the Senate hearings considering the nomination of Judge Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court, Judiciary Committee Chairman Joseph Biden repeatedly browbeat the nominee about the dangers of applying the Natural Law in American jurisprudence. “You come before this committee with a philosophy different from that which we have seen in any Supreme Court nominee in the [last] 19 years,” he sniffed. What did Biden find so “different”? Simple: “You are an adherent to the view that the Natural Law should inform the Constitution.” Biden couldn’t have been more clear: appeals to the Natural Law will fail in the Supreme Court.

Senator Patrick Leahy then asserted that the Natural Law is “elastic,” a notion which Biden seconded by alleging that his version of the Natural Law protects abortion rights. But Judge Thomas would not engage the legal issue. “My interest in the whole area was as a political philosophy,” he told Biden.

Biden, Leahy, and Thomas are all Catholics. So is Justice Kennedy, who wrote in 1992 that “at the heart of liberty is the right to define one’s own concept of existence, of meaning, of the universe, and of the mystery of human life.” Clearly current jurisprudence has sundered the courts from the true source of justice. They simply cannot be trusted.

Catholic? Or American?

In Cardinal Dolan’s May 12 commencement speech at Catholic University, he exulted “that this university is both Catholic and American, flowing from the most noble ideals of truth and respect for human dignity that are at the heart of our Church and our country.” Indeed, ever since Cardinal Gibbons, American prelates have labored to make Catholics “good Americans.” But today the bishops — longtime supporters, collaborators, and beneficiaries of the federal government — have suddenly awakened to the fact that the government might have filed for divorce.

Clearly, Catholics have every right to demand that the courts respect what Cardinal Dolan’s address called the “essential ingredient in American wisdom and the genius of the American republic … the freedom it allows for religion to flourish.” However, our positivist courts roundly reject the notion that they might have any responsibility to do so. The courts have revised the First Amendment repeatedly over the years, and they are likely to do so again. After all, “the Constitution is what they say it is.”

Is The Truth “Too Hot To Handle”?

What cannot be revised, however, is Humanae Vitae. There, Natural Law and the Teaching and Tradition of the Church combine to illuminate our troubled world with the brilliant, saving light of eternal moral truth. Why hasn’t Cardinal Dolan even mentioned Humanae Vitae, at least en passant, in the current Fortnight of Freedom? Aren’t our freedoms grounded on truth – the Way, the Truth, and the Life? After all, the Truth is still the Truth, whatever the courts say it is.

Cardinal Dolan has candidly admitted why he doesn’t want contraception to be the issue: the bishops, he told the Wall Street Journal in March, haven’t taught Humanae Vitae for 44 years. In essence, he has admitted that, when it comes to sexual morality, our shepherds have abandoned the teachings both of the Magisterium and the Natural Law ever since Vatican II.

“We have gotten gun-shy…in speaking with any amount of cogency on chastity and sexual morality,” he said. The “flashpoint” was Humanae Vitae: “It brought such a tsunami of dissent, departure, disapproval of the Church, that I think most of us—and I’m using the first-person plural intentionally, including myself—kind of subconsciously said, ‘Whoa. We’d better never talk about that, because it’s just too hot to handle.’”

Cardinal Dolan went on to regret that the clerical abuse and cover-up scandals have attenuated even more the authority of our bishops. The scandals “intensified our laryngitis over speaking about issues of chastity and sexual morality, because we almost thought, ‘I’ll blush if I do. . . . After what some priests and some bishops, albeit a tiny minority, have done, how will I have any credibility in speaking on that?’”

Cardinal Dolan proposed no program to reverse this half-century trend.

The laity have every right to know that however weak the voice of our bishops has been on moral matters in our lifetimes, the truth has not been abrogated. And when the law attacks the truth, the decision is simple: lex malla, lex nulla. As Aquinas puts it, “human law is law only by virtue of its accordance with right reason; and thus it is manifest that it flows from the eternal law. And in so far as it deviates from right reason it is called an unjust law; in such case it is no law at all, but rather a species of violence.” (ST I-II 93.3 ad 2)

Avoid contraception? Avoid Humanae Vitae? Abandon Natural Law? If we do, we are left naked before a sterile secular sword wielded by the Dictatorship of Relativism. Moreover, on the practical level, as Mary Eberstadt observes in her penetrating Adam and Eve After the Pill, “contraceptive sex … is the fundamental social fact of our time.”

Which brings to mind: doesn’t Humanae Vitae teach genuine “Social Justice”?

Pope Benedict knows the score. He has repeatedly offered encouragement regarding the Church’s moral teachings to various groups of bishops on the ad limina visits to Rome. “I urge you as Pastors to ensure that the Church’s moral teaching be always presented in its entirety and convincingly defended,” he told a group from the United Kingdom.  To bishops from the United States he said in May, “It is no exaggeration to say that providing young people with a sound education in the faith represents the most urgent internal challenge facing the Catholic community in your country.”

Given the Supreme Court’s decision on Obamacare, it is clear that Catholics cannot put their faith in princes, however highly regarded their station. We are up against the cultural haycutter — Archbishop Gomez is correct: it is not only the Obama Administration, but the entire panoply of the cultural elites that confronts the Church today as never before. Even though the elites constitute a small minority of Americans, their deleterious impact has been so profound that one wonders if it is reversible at all. Whatever those prospects, the Church cannot count on a court that has abandoned metaphysics, the Natural Law, and The Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God.

What Is To Be Done?

One cannot blame Cardinal Dolan for pursuing the legal defense of our First Amendment rights. After all, at Catholic University, Dolan proudly hailed the school – and implicitly the church in the United States – as “both Catholic and American.” But if Cardinal Dolan were to firmly plant his feet on the Catholic Truth and the Natural Law, instead of going to the U.S. courts, it would amount to a Declaration of Independence by the American Church from America’s rotting regime. It would also constitute a Declaration of War – in this case, fully justified under the Just War doctrine because the Catholic Church, her members, and her good works have been brutally and mortally attacked.

Such a declaration would be supported by the teaching, tradition, and authority of the Church –not only declaring the ObamaCare Mandate illegitimate, but proclaiming that the American legal system is no longer to be trusted. Clearly, since Engel v. Vitale, Roe v. Wade, and a host of other deleterious Supreme Court decisions, any sane person knows that the Supreme Court, like Biden and Leahy, has only contempt for the Natural Law. But for the Church formally to announce that fact as the basis for its refusal to obey a lex malla would bring on certain retaliation, abuse, and even persecution, driven by the cultural and political elites whose power relies on the progressive degeneration of our culture and the corruption of our politics.

Cardinal James Francis Stafford has written that 1968 represents America’s “suicide attempt” – most notably evidenced within the Church by the rebellion against Humanae Vitae. What Cardinal Dolan has called the “laryngitis” of our shepherds has led to a laity that is adrift, suffocating in a culture of sin and swill. They are longing to breathe free, energized by the truth – as Pope Benedict insists, all of it. Ignoring Humane Vitae has brought the Church to the brink of suicide, yet that document is precisely the life preserver we have been longing for.

The perils of positivist law should be posted with a “no trespassing” sign when it comes to eternal truths. The Catholic Church should tell the U.S. government what religious liberty is, not the other way around.

Today our bishops are united as never before, and so are the faithful. Our bishops have our prayers, our attention, and our support. This very day the American Church is more energetic than it has been for decades.

Enough of the “laryngitis”! Now is the time to teach Humanae Vitae!

Repetem-se erros que conduziram Hitler ao poder

Dois académicos da universidade espanhola Pompeu Fabra concluíram pela história, matemática e economia o que muitos políticos aprendem na pele - que a austeridade provoca contestação social, e que mais vale subir impostos do que cortar benefícios.

"Quanto mais corto nos benefícios sociais, mais agitação social tenho. O nível expectável de agitação aumenta maciçamente à medida que cai a despesa do Estado", disse à Agência Lusa Hans-Joachim Voth, um dos autores do estudo, resumindo a investigação que fez com Jacopo Ponticelli, com o título "Austeridade e Anarquia: Cortes Orçamentais e Agitação Social na Europa, 1919-2009".

No estudo, os dois investigadores olharam para os movimentos de contestação social, incluindo motins, manifestações, greves gerais, assassinatos políticos, crises governamentais e tentativas de revolução, ao longo de 90 anos, em 26 países, incluindo Portugal.

Um período que envolveu uma guerra mundial, assassinatos de presidentes e líderes políticos, nascimentos e mortes de nações, o fim da colonização e inúmeras revoltas e revoluções.

Ponticelli e Voth, investigador de História Económica, concluíram que os países que escolheram aumentar os impostos em vez de reduzir as prestações e serviços sociais enfrentaram menos contestação nas ruas.

"Subir impostos quase não teve efeitos, em comparação com os cortes na despesa. Quem paga impostos tem emprego e portanto, tem muito a perder, enquanto quem recebe transferências sociais - grande parte da despesa pública nos países observados - tem pouco a perder e sente que não é parte interessada na sociedade", explica o investigador.

"Ao ver o Estado cortar a despesa, ao dizer aos mais pobres que eles não têm prioridade, um número significativo vai decidir que este não é o género de sociedade em que querem viver", acrescenta Voth, que compara o fenómeno a um fogo - o fósforo pode ser uma causa exterior, mas o combustível são as razões que levam "tantas pessoas dispostas a assumir o pior e a decidir invadir as ruas" e partir para as formas mais extremas de contestação.

O investigador admite que, extrapolando para o futuro as conclusões do passado, é possível recear que o espectro da contestação aumentada ameace a Europa nos próximos anos, até porque, diz Voth, a revolta "tem a ver com as expectativas" e a classe média, que se habituou a esperar do Estado muito mais, deverá engrossar a massa contestatária.

"Se tudo desabar na agitação social, haverá um segundo ciclo em que nos vamos deparar com menos crescimento e receitas fiscais ainda mais baixas. Depois tem que se cortar outra vez e vamos acabar numa espiral, vamos acabar por destruir grande parte do tecido social e político que mantém a estabilidade na Europa", prevê Voth.

O investigador, nascido na Alemanha há 43 anos, diz mesmo que, no caso da crise na Grécia, a Europa vai "olhar para trás e ver que perdeu uma oportunidade gigante" para reforçar o continente e corrigir uma política económica e financeira que Voth compara mesmo àquela que levou à ascensão de Adolf Hitler.

"É o que os alemães viveram no início da década de 1930. A cada ano, o governo tomava novas medidas orçamentais, reduzia os salários da função pública, tentava equilibrar o orçamento e sempre que fazia isto a economia contraía ainda mais, as receitas fiscais era ainda mais baixas, o governo tinha de cortar mais e, no final, destruiu a democracia alemã.

"Repetir este erro é completamente imperdoável, em 2011", concluiu Voth.
